The Importance of Hiring A Good Team

When you need help, it is not too hard to put together a team, but it can be difficult to create a team where everyone works well together and can deliver the results that you need.

A good way to start your hiring process is by contacting people in your industry and getting some referrals on individuals that you want to speak with.  When you hire someone that has worked with one of your contacts you will have a true picture of what that employee is like in the day to day work setting. Your contacts will be able to inform you about the contractor’s ability to handle the tasks that you need done in your business. You will hear an honest critique of that person’s strengths and weaknesses from your associates. Networking is a wonderful way to find team members who will be an asset for your company.

You can see, who you hire to work for you and your business will have a huge impact on the success of your business and its profits.  Since many customers are actually repeat customers, you will want to make sure that you keep your customers happy.  One of the best ways to do that is to make sure that all of the staff on your team are a pleasure to deal with.  I have always had the philosophy of “If you are not doing what you love, then why are you doing it?”  This attitude in a person will show and your customers and clients will be able to benefit from this attitude.  Many years ago, I worked jobs, where I did not love what I was doing,  and that reflected throughout my attitude and it showed.    I am so thankful now that I do what I truly love to do and I believe that my clients can see that.

You should also ask yourself some questions and have an idea of what you need to have in this team member.  Questions like:

  • How do you like to communicate and how often do you need to communicate with your team member?  Daily, weekly?  On the phone, by email or in person?
  • What level of commitment will you need from this team member? Full time, part time, or as needed?  Do you have an idea of how many hours a month or week that you will need that person for?
  • How involved do you want this team member to be in your business, do you need someone to brainstorm with you on projects or do you want someone that will just implement your plan or task?

Just a few questions like these can prevent misunderstandings and probably quite a bit of wasted time.  Do not rush your search for the right team member.  When you find the right fit for your business, you’ll have a great team member that will benefit you for a long time.
